The resignation of the now former PM Gordon Brown vindicated my long standing (7 years to be precise) prediction, that “New” Labour would be finished should he ever become leader. And yet I couldn’t help feel a great sense of sadness as he walked away from Downing street, his two sons and wife by his side. After all here was a man who had ambition & dedication who, despite his best efforts was always going to fail. A fellow human being with fears and aspirations, hopes and dreams but with a scotoma when it came to how ridiculous they were. Emotional stuff to be sure, but if I or indeed the country had wished to arouse such visceral emotions we could have simply gone to see Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman for twenty quid & spared ourselves suffering this parade of obstinate second raters: Brown, McNulty, McBride, Balls, Smith, Nye, Cooper to name but a few. So the new government has been cobbled together, an ad hoc solution to the problem of who is running the country. something to tide us over until the wheels fall off & David Milliband can take over as PM. Anyway the real issue that no one seems to be discussing at the moment:
